Bring Your Dog to Your NYC Engagement Session

engagement session

Alexandra and Jake brought their dog to their NYC engagement session!

The streets of New York City are always bustling with people and commerce. It’s an energy and life force that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world. The great thing about using NYC as your playground for your engagement session is that you can bring your dog along to the shoot!

Here are my top 8 tips as a New York City Engagement Photographer, for bringing your dog to your engagement session!!

1) Consult with your photographer

Let your photographer know ahead of time that you would like to include your dog in your engagement session. Let them know your fur baby’s name and if you have any specific ideas of how you would like to include them in the shoot.

2) Make sure your pup has walked & played ahead of time

A dog who has walked and played is a happy dog! Taking care of your dog ahead of time will help them be less fidgety and more attentive during your shoot.

3) Call for backup

If you have a dog walker, friend, or family member who is close to your pup, bring them along to the shoot. This will help keep your dog loved and entertained for those ‘just the two of you’ shots.

4) Bring a doggy dish

Having a small doggy travel bowl for water (especially on hot days) is a necessity to keep your pup happy and hydrated!

5) Travel size lint rollers are amazing

If your dog is a shedder, bring along a travel-size lint roller that you can use to touch up with between shots!

6) Your dog should be sercurely leashed or harnessed

In a city like New York, it’s hard to know what outside factors might set your dog off. Having your dog properly leashed will make sure that we are in compliance with the local leash laws. It will also provide the safety and security of knowing that your dog is right by your side.

7) Treats & Toys

Want your dog to look into the camera? Bring along their favorite treats and 1 or 2 of their favorite toys. If your dog loves squeaky toys, those are great for me to squeeze so that I can get their attention and have them look directly into the camera.

8) Props

Do you have a cute little bowtie for your dog? How about a cute dog shirt that says my humans are getting married? Perfect! These items make for adorable props when you bring your dog to your engagement session!

My couple depicted below will be wed in upstate New York this fall, their chosen wedding venue, Troutbeck is a Hudson Valley Estate set in the serene countryside. Troutbeck does allow their guests to bring along their dogs but you must be in a dog-friendly guestroom. Additionally, your dog must be leashed at all times while on the property. I’m hoping that Alexandra and Jake’s pup will make a special appearance on their wedding day!!
